Today is a special day. It marks the third year that Melissa has been a wonderful and energetic part of lives. I wasn't there when Melissa was born and so her birthday holds less significance for me other than it might otherwise. But Jan 20th is the day that holds all the memories for me. Jan 20th is the day we got The phone call. It is the day we rushed, holding our breath to the agency. It is the day that I first saw her, that I first held her, that I first learned I was going to me a mother. Jan 2oth is the day we brought her home. It is the day that I thought 'holy crap I have a baby, now what'. Jan 2oth is the day that changed my life forever. And so I want to celebrate Jan 20th.
But Melissa is old enough now to understand birthdays. And we made a big deal about her going on an airplane for her birthday. And even though we didn't do much for her birthday besides the airplane she knows that her birthday has come and gone. So now I need to figure out what to call today. Adoption day? Gottya Day? Lets have a party to celebrate Melissa day? Second birthday? What do you think? What would make the most sense to a three year old?

My 2010 Story
New Years Resolutions or The Story that I will write in 2010. My friend posted this awesome post, about looking forward to 2010. She posted this link. These two people said it much better than I can. But the basic premise is if you make your 'goals' your story it becomes part of you and you are more likely to succeed. My story starts as follows:
In 2010 my baby will turn one, and will learn to roll over, sit up on her own, crawl, eat solid food, walk and get into everyting . My oldest will sing in the sacrament program, she WILL learn to go on the potty (even if it kills her mother), possible start preschool and grow in ways I can only begin to imagine. All this freaks me out a bit. But it is part of my story and so this year I will remember to slow down and enjoy my baby being a baby. And though she tries my patients to no end some days and some days I want to lose it, I will slow down and enjoy my daughter being three. I will enjoy the small and simple things. I will cherish the time I have with them as I watch them learn and grow.
In 2010 I will do all of that but at the same time find a way to get dishes, laundry, etc done and still have time for myself. I will re-read the book of mormon and grow spiritually. I will exercise with friends. I will cherish old friendships and cultivate new ones.
In 2010 I will have been married to my best friend for 10 years. I WILL spend one night (hopefully two) alone with him. We will reconnect as friends, and spouses.
2010 will been an eventful year for us. And I'm excited to see what else the year has in store for us. I can't wait for the adventure.

My M&Ms
A few days ago as I'm trying to get some laundry done 'Big M' gets in my dirty laundry hamper, it was empty at the time do to the fact I was washing stuff. Its a deep round wicker basket, shaped like a garbage can. She gets in and say "I grouch, like on Elmo". How cute is that she was playing Oscar the crouch. I love seeing her imagination grow.
'Little m' is the cutest baby ever and I'm not prejudiced, okay I am. I love the way she coos at me and how she kicks her legs when she is excited.
Sidenote to self: I'm need to post more of these, like every week, so that I have a record of the cute stuff they do, and I can remember the good moments when they drive me crazy, it all goes to one of my new years resolutions which is a post I haven't written yet...is that a run on sentenced, oh well my major ain't grammer.

Callings
I was released from my calling* in Young Womens today. It was the first time that I cried about changing callings. Okay truth be told I bawled a few times. I love these girls so much and I loved that calling. I honestly expected to work with the Young Women until I left the ward, I think it was part of how I defined myself within the ward. I know that I can redefine myself and that I will learn to love my new calling (ward missionary). I also know that the Lord directs callings within the church. But I'm still a little sad. I'm especially going to miss the social connection with the girls on Wed nights. Coming home from vacation I was feeling a little down. The YW had a get together and I knew going would cheer me right up and it did.
*Most of you reading this blog are more than familiar with the term 'calling' as it refers to the church for any of you who may not be here is a short and hopefully understandable explanation. Within the church aka The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints aka the Mormons, we have lay ministry. Which means that we have no paid clergy. Our congregation is called a ward and a bishop is in charge of everyone in the ward, but he also has to make a living and support a family, which would be impossible for one person. So the bishop has two counselors, a secretary, and a ward clerk. But even that isn't enough. So all of the auxiliary organizations, Primary (children), Young Women (teenagers girls), Relief Society (women), Young Men (teenager boys) and so one; each have a president, two counselors, a secretary, teachers and so one. It trickles down to every member of the ward. A callings is what position you are serving in. Its called a calling because you don't volunteer for it, the bishop in counsel with others prays and prays and receives inspiration about who should be where, when and for how long. It often takes us by surprise and we often don't know why we are called to serve where we are. But what a wonderful system. Without it everyone would always do what they always did. The same people would always be in the forefront leading the way and the same people would be on the back-row. You would always stay within your comfort zone and you wouldn't grow as much or influence as many people as you do when you are ask to stretch and step outside the familiar. A good reminder to myself.

Christmas Trip
You would think a person with no job and no school would have tons of time, but sadly I never seem to have any. Plus its always hard to get on the computer when any kids are awake and having two asleep at the same time is quite the challenge. Anyway after getting home and unpacking, 10 loads of laundry, recovering a house from Christmas and vacation, not to mention playing with the Christmas toys we didn't have a chance to play with before we left namely a Wii, I finally got around to breaking out my NEW computer and Kent has installed our new wireless internet. So excited. Well I have lots of posts floating around in my head. I guess my blog is feast or famine; Bon Appetite.
Our Christmas Trip in Summary:
Our Christmas Trip in Summary:
- Melissa got to fly on a airplane for her 3rd birthday.
- Living up to my fears we got stuck in Denver, and flew to Vernal UT. Apparently there IS an airport there.
- Most of Kent's family were surprised to see us which was way fun.
- We were going non-stop from early to way late, and felt pulled in 20 directions. But despite that we managed to spend some quality time with almost everyone that we wanted/needed to.
- I finished my first pieced quilt. It took a ton of time and stayed up till 1 am to finish it and then forgot to take a picture of it.
- I ate at Leatherbys, Bombay, and Cafe Rio
- Had many wonderful visits with close friends.
- Got to go birding. For a full report click here.
- Attended my sisters baby blessings. Which was awesome. She made a baby blessing dress out of her wedding dress. It totally looked like a miniature version of her dress it was really pretty.
- Took my daughter and nephew sledding. I had as much fun as they did, we also build a snowman.
- Attended my brothers wedding. Which was incredible. The ceremony was moving and the reception was so much fun.
- I wasn't ready to come home. It didn't help that the day we came back the high temp was 0, and they were predicting overnight lows in the -20s (air temp). I usually look forward to returning to Omaha but not this time. Maybe it was because we left so soon after the wedding, or maybe because there was so much going on with both of our families, I don't know. Whatever the reason for the first time since moving to Nebraska I felt the sting of leaving family. I miss them and I've got homesick before but this was different. It was a wonderful trip back and I'm very glad we went.

Projects
I finally have a star for the top of my Christmas tree... and its even hand made.
Melissa and I have been really into crafts lately. She LOVES them and Kent tolerates the glitter barely.I also now have matching Christmas Stockings

And one day I went looking for a recipe. My drawer was crammed with loose recipes. Everything from recipe cards, to back of noodle bags, to scraps of paper, to sheets of paper. So it went from this...
to this
to thisSide note: I never found the recipe that I was looking for. But now next time I want it I'll be able to find it. At least that's the theory.
